What We’re Reading

What We're Reading

what we're reading_

We’re readers in this house.

Danny’s always looking through cookbooks for inspiration, thinking of new flavor combinations and ways to prepare dishes. I read voraciously, everything from literary fiction to poetry to books on modern history to friends’ food memoirs. And our daughter gobbles up stories the way she eats apples and cheese: with great joy, then asking for more.

For years, we’ve been writing about the books that have moved us. We thought we’d put those pieces and sideways references to the books we’re reading in one place. In case you’re interested.

Just a note. If you see a link to a book we love, like our latest cookbook , know that it will take you to Amazon. We’re part of an affiliate program there, which means that we get a very small amount of money if you buy that book. And if you continue shopping there, we get a small percentage of those sales. Mostly, the money we earn there helps us pay for the flours we have to buy to test recipes for you!

finding full health

so we’ll always remember

For the past couple of weeks, Lucy and I  have been reading James and the Giant Peach, one of my very favorite books. Danny and I lie down with her in the evening, on either…

holding it in our hands, lightly

There was a moment on the ferry, after I had flopped down on a bench by the window, where everything fell into focus. We had been traveling for weeks — Danny in Breckenridge for a family…

the words that burrow in

Last night, at dinner, Lucy asked us: “What is a family?” The question came as we ate homemade chicken strips (the recipe is in our new cookbook), avocado hummus dip, and yellow rice with…

here it is.

We’ve been waiting quite awhile to share this with you. Two years, actually. Pregnancy and childbirth go faster than conceiving, creating, and bringing a cookbook to bookstore shelves. We don’t mind, though. We love this process.…
